We live here, we work here — and we still plan our weekends like visitors. Twentynine Palms is the gateway town to Joshua Tree National Park, and it's built for exactly this kind of weekend: arrive Friday, play hard Saturday, slow down Sunday, and (our favorite move) stay for Monday.
Friday: roll in for golden hour
Beat the traffic and get into town by late afternoon. The light in the high desert at golden hour is the whole reason people come here — a Joshua tree silhouetted against a pink-orange sky will reset a workweek faster than anything else we know. Sunset through the trees, dinner in town, early night. Tomorrow's the big one.
If you're driving in from LA, here's how to time the drive properly: Los Angeles to Twentynine Palms: The Drive, Timed Properly. And if you're wondering when the desert is at its best, our seasonal guide has the answer: When to Visit the High Desert.
Saturday: park day
This is the main event. Joshua Tree National Park's north entrance is right here in town, so you're on the trail in minutes, not hours. Our rotation: Hidden Valley for the boulder wonderland, Arch Rock for the photo everyone actually wants, Skull Rock for the easy stop that still delivers. Hike it, scramble it, or find a warm rock and sit — the desert doesn't grade you.
Pack more water than you think. The desert doesn't do shortcuts.
Saturday night: the Dark Sky Park show
Joshua Tree is an International Dark Sky Park, and Saturday night is when that designation earns its keep. No tickets, no agenda — just look up. The Milky Way over the boulders is the kind of thing that makes people start checking real estate listings on the drive home.
Sunday: slow down
Slow morning, coffee in town, then the downtown art scene: murals, galleries, and the creative energy that runs up and down Highway 62. For the full list of stops — Fortynine Palms Oasis, the Oasis of Mara, the Old Schoolhouse Museum, Sky's the Limit Observatory, Smith's Ranch Drive-In, Theatre 29, and more — see our guide: Things to Do in Twentynine Palms, From People Who Work Here.
Monday: the hack — work from the desert
Here's the move most weekenders miss: don't drive home Sunday night into traffic. Stay one more day and work from Black Cactus on Monday — fast Wi-Fi, a real desk, zero commute — then cruise home after the traffic clears. It's the best day of the weekend, and it's a workday.
Curious what a full workweek here actually looks like? A Week Working from Twentynine Palms and Working Remotely from Joshua Tree: Wifi, Desks and Day Passes tell the whole story. Coming with a team instead? Corporate retreats at Black Cactus are built for exactly that.
