Driving from Los Angeles to Twentynine Palms
Roughly two and a half hours without traffic, and traffic is the whole variable. Here is what the drive is actually like, when to leave, and what to expect at the other end.

The route
Most people take the I-10 east through the Inland Empire, then turn north — either up Highway 62 through Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree, or continuing further east depending on where you start. Highway 62 is the classic approach: the road climbs out of the valley, the landscape changes character somewhere around Morongo, and you arrive in the high desert rather than beside it.
The last stretch through Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree is where people slow down. It is worth the extra ten minutes.
When to leave
Leaving LA. Before 6am or after 10am on a weekday. The 10 east between roughly 6:30 and 9:30 is where a two and a half hour drive becomes four. Friday afternoons in season are the worst case — the whole city drives to the desert at once.
Coming back. Sunday afternoons westbound are the mirror image. If you can leave Sunday morning or wait until evening, do.
Best case. Early Saturday morning eastbound is close to empty and the light coming into the high desert is worth the alarm.
Practical notes
- Fuel up before Highway 62. Stations thin out and prices climb the further you go.
- Cell coverage is patchy in stretches of the drive and inside the park. Download your route.
- Summer heat is real. Check your coolant and tyres before an August run. This is not a drive to do in a car you are worried about.
- Parking is not a problem at this end. That is one of the differences between here and where you left.
Making the drive worth it
Two and a half hours each way is a poor trade for a single meeting and a good trade for two or three days. Most people who come out to work do it as a block — a few days of focused work, some time in the park, then back.
If you are coming for a day, come early and stay late. If you are coming for a week, a week pass covers five flexible days.
Somewhere to land when you get here
You arrive in a town of about 28,000 people with a national park on its doorstep and not many places to open a laptop. Black Cactus is on Adobe Rd in downtown Twentynine Palms — hi-speed internet, air conditioning, a kitchenette, and a door that closes when you need to take a call.
