Planning a High Desert Team Offsite
Twentynine Palms and the Joshua Tree area work well for small-team offsites, for reasons that have little to do with the scenery.
Why the desert works
The useful thing about this area is not the view. It is the distance.
A team that drives two hours out of Los Angeles or an hour from Palm Springs arrives somewhere with genuinely fewer distractions. Nobody is popping back to the office. Nobody is leaving early to beat traffic to a dinner. The separation from normal working life is what makes an offsite work, and geography does a lot of that job for you.
The area is also inexpensive relative to conventional conference venues, which means more of the budget goes to the days themselves.
What to plan for
- Heat, seasonally. Summer afternoons are genuinely hot. Plan outdoor time for early morning or evening, and do not schedule a walking activity at 2pm in July.
- Distance between places. Things are further apart than they look on a map. Build in drive time between lodging, meeting space, and meals.
- Connectivity. Generally fine, but confirm it if you need reliable video calls or a live demo.
- Dinner reservations. Options are limited and fill up, particularly on weekends. Book before you arrive.
- Arrival timing. If people are driving in, the first morning is largely gone. Either accept that or bring everyone in the night before.
Splitting lodging and working space
Most groups book a house and try to work in it. That can be fine, but kitchens and living rooms are poor rooms for a decision-making session — no wall to write on, bad sight lines, and someone always ends up on a couch half out of the conversation.
Booking dedicated meeting space for the working blocks and using the house for everything else tends to produce better sessions. It also gives the day a shape: you go somewhere to work, then you come back.
